The number of villages equipped with both liquid and solid waste management facilities that are also visibly clean has jumped 24 times to 3.1 lakh from 12,960 two years ago, according to a Moneycontrol analysis.

Over half of the country's villages have become ODF-plus model villages, compared to 2.2 percent just two years ago. Six Union Territories and states have achieved over 90 percent ODF-plus model status, while 24 are over the national average of 53 percent.

Among the larger states with the highest number of ODF-plus model villages, Kerala topped the list, with 95 percent of its villages being ODF-plus models, followed by Telangana and Madhya Pradesh, which had over 80 percent coverage. ODF refers to villages free of open defecation.

Madhya Pradesh has witnessed the maximum gains over the last two years, as the share of villages increased from 4.9 percent to 82.5 percent.

Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan have seen a gain of over 66 percent in two years.

Andhra Pradesh has recorded minimum gains, along with Punjab, with the number of villages increasing just 5-6 percentage points in two years. Punjab and Andhra had the lowest ratio of villages with ODF-plus model villages.
