BRUSSELS ― Former European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi is to present his landmark report on EU competitiveness in private to European Parliament political groups on Wednesday, several officials told POLITICO.

Draghi was asked last year by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to prepare a broad study on how European industry can regain advantages on the global stage in a highly complicated geopolitical landscape.

EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola invited Draghi to give the presentation, Metsola's spokesperson confirmed to POLITICO.

The meeting will be a “technical” briefing ahead of the official presentation of the report, expected later in September, an aide to Draghi said. It is the only point on the agenda of the meeting.

"Draghi will line up his report, and all the group leaders will be able to ask follow-up questions," Metsola's spokesperson said.

As Draghi, also a former Italian prime minister, has suggested in several speeches, the work will be centered on how to fill the productivity gap recorded in the last 30 years relative to the United States, which has been mostly driven by a lack of investment in innovation.

It will propose "a radical change" for the bloc's economy, Draghi said in April.

The report, expected to come in at about 400 pages, is the work of Draghi and a group of seven Commission officials.

The report includes around 300 pages of analysis, touches on crucial sectors such as energy, defense, and trade, and pitches proposals on how to strengthen European infrastructure, industry, and governance of EU countries' economic and fiscal policies.
