The oft-repeated phrase of developed India or Viksit Bharat in the prime minister’s over 10,000-word long address—the second longest since 2014—caught people’s attention as well.

Viksit Bharat or developed India was one of the most referred terms, according to a Moneycontrol analysis of search trends during and after the prime minister’s Independence Day address on August 15.

The prime minister uttered the word and its variations some 31 times during his one-and-a-half-hour-long address. Analysis shows that the message resonated most in the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana, whereas in Delhi and Madhya Pradesh, online audience took a shine to 2047—the year India celebrates its independence centenary.

Odisha, Assam and Haryana were the top states for searches on women's development, whereas skills were a concern for people in Nagaland, Mizoram and Jammu and Kashmir.

Employment was a top concern in Maharashtra, while corruption was top search item Delhi, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand.

The prime minister mentioned the word corruption 13 times in his speech.

Political parties eyeing victory in upcoming state elections in Haryana, Maharashtra and Jammu and Kashmir are headed for elections later this year, while Jharkhand is scheduled for polls in January 2025. Delhi is scheduled for polls in February next year.

Bangladesh, violence and Hindu population

The prime minister also expressed concern about the situation in the neighbourhood (Bangladesh), calling for safety of Hindus and the minority populations in the area.

Google Trends analysis shows some interesting trends in how the problem is perceived.

While Bangladesh was the top search for neighbouring states of Tripura, West Bengal and Assam, violence in Bangladesh was being searched by Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Hindus in Bangladesh was a top search item for Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Assam.

Eye on the future

West Bengal, Delhi and Assam led the country in search of reforms, which was also a commonly cited term from the prime minister’s speech. Kerala and Odisha’s concerns were medical seats.

The prime minister observed that the government plans to add 75,000 more medical seats to the already existing 108,000 seats within the next five years.

Delhi also led the country in searches on Olympics 2036 and net zero.

The prime minister expressed the desire to host the summer games in 2036.

Delhi was the host city for the 2008 Commonwealth Games.

Delhi figured in searches for green jobs and organic food.

Organic food was a domain of states with high per capita income with Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Punjab leading the search.

Gujarat led in searches on 6G. while Bihar, Kerala and Gujarat were more interested in artificial intelligence.

Design in India found resonance in Goa and Gujarat, while independence day related gaming queries found a market in Delhi, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Secular Civil Code was the top searched item in Goa, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir, followed by Haryana and Maharashtra. Delhi was also among the top regions searching for One Nation One Election, followed by Assam and Telangana.

Goa is the only state where a version of the Uniform Civil Code is in place.
